Gold Team Evens Series with 3-2 Win over Black 10/12/2003
Gold Team Evens Series with 3-2 Win over Black 10-12-03 Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Gold Team came back from a two-run deficit to defeat the Black Team, 3-2, today in Charlie Hawkins Stadium. The series is now tied at 1-1 with the third and final game of the series scheduled tomorrow (Monday) at 6 pm “It’s do or die now for both teams,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “As a coach, you want to see this series go to a third game because it puts a high importance on the game and it should be very competitive.” There were six errors in the contest, including four for the Black Team and two for the Gold Team. “We took a day off yesterday and today we were very sloppy,” Corbin added “We had a few miscues and that is not characteristic of Vanderbilt baseball. We also didn’t have an edge offensively today – we were not aggressive at the plate – you have to give credit to the pitching today.” The Black Team took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Warner Jones (5-10, 160, So., OF, Nashville, Tenn.) hit a double to right field scoring Aaron Garza (6-0, 179, Fr., OF, Austin, Texas) and Greg Del George (5-11, 159, Fr., SS, Staten Island, NY). The Gold Team evened the score at two in the fifth inning when Colton Daines (5-11, 183, Jr., LF, Emerald Hills, Calf.) scored on a single by Antoan Richardson (5-8, 165, Jr., CF, Nassau, Bahamas). Gil Kim (5-6, 150, Jr., 2B, Pottsville, Penn.) advanced to third on the hit and then scored on a throwing error by Bill Kleinshrodt (6-3, 205, Fr., RF, Mobile, Ala.) on the same play. The Gold Team took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Daines scored off a Kim ground out to second. Daines had reached base on an error by Zach Simpson (6-0, 185, Jr., 2B, Fayetteville, Ark.). Freshman pitcher Tyler Rhoden (6-2, 201, Macclenny, Fla.) picked up the win for the Gold Team pitching three innings giving up no hits and numbering one walk and strikeout.
