Western Kentucky Defeats Vanderbilt 4-0 in Missouri Valley Conference Action

Bowling Green, Ky

– Daniel Payne scored two goals to help lead Western Kentucky to a 4-0 win over Vanderbilt in Missouri Valley Conference action. Western Kentucky is now 5-6-1, 2-1 in the MVC, while Vanderbilt owns a 3-5-4 record, 0-2-1 in league action.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the opening minutes as Vanderbilt had two back-to-back shots saved by WKU goalkeeper Daryl Sattler. The Hilltoppers also came up empty handed ten minutes into the match when Steven Medlock pulled VU goalie Conor Ellinger out of goal, but he shot was saved by a Commodore defender to keep the match scoreless.

Medlock would score 10 minutes later when he rebounded his own shot for a 1-0 WKU lead. Seven minutes later, Daniel Payne took a pass from Richard Mupfudze and drove it in from 15-yards out. The Hilltoppers owned a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Payned scored again at the 55:31 mark when he collected a rebound off the post to give Western Kentucky a 3-0 lead. The Hilltoppers finished their scoring at the 85:32 mark when Marc Walters floated a shot over Ellinger for his first goal of the season.

Vanderbilt totaled 11 shots in the contest, eight on goal, led by Curt Hinds, Jimmy Stone and Ryan Paugh with two each. Brent Richard ad Kyle Lapkewych also numbered a shot on goal.

Ellinger ended the night with six saves allowing the four goals.

The Commodores host Creighton Friday (Oct. 17) at 7 pm in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
