10/10/2003

Auburn, Ala

. – The #24 Auburn Tigers came back from a two-goal deficit scoring three unanswered second-half goals to defeat the Vanderbilt Commodores, 3-2. Auburn improves to 8-2-2 overall while Vanderbilt is now 5-5-1.

The Commodores two shots in the first half both resulted in goals. Emily Wilpers took a cross from Molly Wilson and scored when Auburn goalkeeper Megan Rivera came out to defend the cross. Eight minutes later, Laura Hershenow scored her fifth goal of the season when she kicked in a shot from five-yards out and the Commodores led 2-0 at intermission. VU goalkeeper Esther Thompson totaled three saves in the first half.

Auburn scored at the 46:12 mark when Jac Schwarz’s header off a Kellie Evans direct kick passed Thompson. The Tigers tied it at the 65:56 mark when Sarah Steinmann drew VU defenders away from Ronda Brooks who scored in the middle from five-yards out. Nine minutes later, Steinmann dribbled down the middle and had a direct shot from three-yards out to give Auburn the win.

“We played a fantastic first half of soccer, but we got rattled in the first minute-and-a-half of the second half,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill said. “Auburn made some adjustments in the second half and we just backed off and paniced under the pressure and I’m very disappointed that we didn’t answer to that. Auburn is obviously a good team and they just decided they were just not going to lose to us tonight,” Hill concluded.

The Commodores totaled just one shot in the second half. Auburn totaled nine shots, eight on goal, while Vanderbilt numbered three shots, two on goal. Thompson numbered five saves giving up three goals, while Rivera did not register a save but allowed two goals.

Vanderbilt continues its road swing when they play Alabama Sunday (Oct. 12) in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
