Women’s Soccer Falls To Arkansas 2-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team totaled 12 shots, including three in the final three minutes, but couldn’t score as the Commodores were defeated by Arkansas, 2-0, in Southeastern Conference action at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Vanderbilt is now 4-4-1, 0-2 in SEC action, while Arkansas is 5-3-2, 1-0 in league play.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Arkansas totaled eight shots, six on goal, and scored two goals, both by senior forward Julie Williford.  The first Lady ‘Backs goal came at the 38:44 mark with Williford dribbled the ball for 25 yards and then shot it past VU goalkeeper Esther Thompson from 17-yards out.  Williford then picked up her second goal at the 56:29 mark when she knocked in a rebound off Thompson’s punch from the top of the box.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The Commodores totaled nine second half shots.  Senior Jen Talavera’s shot at the 78:44 mark was knocked above the goal by Arkansas goalkeeper Carrie Dillsaver and then had a header deflected by an Arkansas player 27 seconds later.  Senior Jennifer Lewis had a shot saved by Dillsaver at the 87:20 mark as senior Laura Hershenow’s shot went high with just over two minutes to go in the contest.  Junior Jessica Fear’s shot went wide right at the 89:04 mark.

In the first half, junior Michelle Bruntlett lobbed a shot over the Arkansas defense from 20-yards out at the 25:41 mark, but the shot was hit over the goal by Dillsaver.

Dillsaver ended the night with five saves in her second career shutout, while VU’s Thompson totaled four saves allowing the two goals.

Vanderbilt totaled 12 shots, five on goal, while Arkansas numbered eight shots, six on goal.

The Commodores return to SEC action Sunday (Oct. 5) when they host LSU at 2:30 pm on Fox Sports Net South TV.  It’s Fan Appreciation Day so admission is free.
