What Are the Odds? 9/30/2003
What Are the Odds? That is what the golf world is asking these days after two Vanderbilt golfers combined for an incredible golfing feat. During a practice September 27 at the Golf House of Tennessee, junior Ben McClung of Ponte Vedra, Fla. scored a hole-in-one on the par 3, 125 yard seventh hole using a wedge. Teammate Lance Goodson, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., stepped to the tee next, took out his wedge and?hole-in-one! Back-to-back aces! Three others witnessed this rarity. The Vanderbilt media relations office is trying to find someone qualified to determine the odds of this happening. We are fairly certain you won’t see this in your foursome any time soon! For Commodore Head Coach Press McPhaul — believe it or not — there is another coincidence to the story. McPhaul, a former North Carolina State golfer and coach, remembers in the early 1990’s when the same thing happened in a fivesome of North Carolina Tarheel golfers at a course in Dalton, Georgia called The Farm. And guess where the Vanderbilt golf team is traveling this weekend? Yes, Dalton, Georgia for the Carpet Capital Intercollegiate — played at The Farm. The truth is sometimes stranger than fiction! |
