Men’s Soccer Tops East Carolina 1-0 Nashville, Tenn. — Freshman forward Josh Medcalf scored at the 40:42 mark to help lead Vanderbilt to a 1-0 victory over East Carolina this afternoon in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The play was set up when freshman Casey Steen passed the ball to sophomore Brady Hyde who shot it from 16-yards. The shot was deflected off ECU goalkeeper Chris Hicks to Medcalf who chipped it in the left side. The Commodores have now won two consecutive games for the first time since the 2001 season. Vanderbilt defeated Belmont 5-3 Friday night. “It’s great to get the second win in the weekend,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We wanted to play for the result and get back to .500 on the season and we did just that.” Junior goalkeeper Jamie Burns played the entire game and numbered six saves. ECU’s Hicks totaled four saves and allowed the one goal. VU totaled 13 shots, five on goal, led by C. Steen, Medcalf, Ryan McGrath, Kyle Lapkewych and Jamie Gilbert. ECU numbered 18 shots, six on goal, led by Clyde Simms who totaled four, one on goal. The Commodores are now 3-3-3 on the season while East Carolina owns a 3-3-2 mark. Vanderbilt opens Missouri Valley Conference play on the road Friday (Oct. 3) when the Commodores play Bradley at 8 pm. |
