Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer Drops SEC Opener to Kentucky 9/27/2003 Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team dropped its Southeastern Conference season opener to Kentucky Friday night in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex, 1-0. VU is now 4-3-1, 0-1 in the SEC, while Kentucky improves to 3-5-1, 1-0 in league action. The Commodores totaled five shots in the first half, including two on goal. The Wildcats numbered seven shots, including two on goal. After a scoreless first half, Kentucky’s Elizabeth Ramsey stole the ball and scored on a 20-yard shot when Vanderbilt goalkeeper Esther Thompson was out of the box at the 64:02 mark. Vanderbilt’s Laura Hershenow had two shots blocked 40 seconds later. In the final minutes, an obstruction call against Kentucky gave Hershenow another shot attempt at the 88:34 mark, but the Wildcat goalkeeper, Anne Ogundele collected her fifth save of the game to hold on for the win. Vanderbilt totaled 14 shots in the contest – five on goal – led by Hershenow with six (three on goal). Kentucky numbered 13 shots – five on goal – ed by Ramsey with four. Thompson played the entire game in goal for the Commodores totaling four saves and allowing the one goal. UK’s Ogundele numbered five saves in the contest in her first career shutout. |
