Host Vanderbilt had the day’s second best score but was unable to overcome the commanding lead of Alabama-Birmingham and placed fourth in the third annual Mason Rudolph Championship Tuesday.

UAB won the event by 14 shots over Texas A & M, largely on the strength of its incredible 11-under par performance in Monday’s opening round. The Blazers finished with a team total of five-under par (563).

Texas A & M’s Stephen Reed had the tournament’s best round today with a sizzling 65 and tied with UAB’s Chris Cousins for medalist honors at 136, six under par. Most players felt the course played more difficult today with tighter pin placements and tricky breezes.

Vanderbilt was led by Lance Goodson, who fired a one-under 70 to finish at 142. Luke List had problems on two par 3 holes and shot 75 after opening with an impressive 69. Mark Donnell and Ben McClung each shot 72 today.

The Mason Rudolph Championship was played for the first time at the Golf Club of Tennessee. It was shortened to a 36 hole event after heavy rains washed out Monday morning’s opening round.

Quotes

Alabama-Birmingham Coach Alan Kaufman

“We had ended up on a rather high note last year and with everyone back I was optimistic. We did not play well in our first tournament this fall and while I didn’t lose confidence, I wondered if my hopes were too high. We played this tournament like we are capable of playing. I am very encouraged by our performance over one of the South’s finest golf courses.”

Stephen Reed
Texas A & M

On shooting 65: “I had a real solid round today with one eagle and five birdies. I missed a 3-foot putt on 18 for my only bogey but I putted well both days. I just didn’t seem to score yesterday like I did today.

Chris Cousins
UAB

“Coming into the week I wasn’t hitting the ball well but I managed to find a rhythm and hit some putts. I missed a makeable 4-footer on my last hole and figured that might cost me.”

Luke List
Vanderbilt

“I was glad to see us come back as a team today. I wish it would have been 54 holes. Yesterday I was more consistent. Today, I really played okay but I made two bad swings on a couple of par 3’s and that was the difference in my score. I thought the course played very difficult today, the pins were tucked and the greens became very quick. It was a challenging round of golf.”

Day 1

Alabama-Birmingham’s Garrett Osborn shot a five-under par 66 and teammate Chris Cousins fired a 67 as UAB took a commanding 15 shot lead after the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville. The Blazers were 15-under par as a team.

Host Vanderbilt found itself tied for 11th place, just seven shots out of second place in the 18-team field. Freshman Luke List led the defending champion Commodores with a two-under 69, tied for third place.

The morning round of the tournament was cancelled due to heavy rains. The Mason Rudolph Championship, being played at the Golf Club of Tennessee, will conclude with another 18 holes played Tuesday morning.
