Women’s Cross Country Team Wins Bulldog Stampede

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In their first true SEC test of the season,the Vanderbilt women’s cross country team finished first at the Bulldog Stampede Invitational held today in Athens, GA.

The Commodores edged out SEC rival Georgia by just 4 points to win the meet. Vanderbilt finished with 55 points, while Georgia had 59 points on the 5K course. SEC foes Florida, South Carolina, and LSU also competed. Individual honors were won by South Florida junior Christa Benton who finished with a time of 18:13.02

The Commodores were led once again by freshmen Ashleigh Wetzel (18:34.62, fourth place), Debbie Huss (18:40.36, eighth), and sophomore Erika Schneble (18:56.12, 11th). Also scoring for Vanderbilt were freshman Lauren Pence (19:13.07, 15th), sophomore Caitlin Shannon (19:21.18, 17th), freshman Amy Huss (19:30.66, 19th), and sophomore Jackie Wachsman (19:32.47, 20th). All of the Commodore scorers lowered their times from last week’s 5K. Other finishers included Nadiyah Humber (19:43.09, 22nd), and Shannon Capps (20:03.31, 30th).

For the third week in a row, all of Vanderbilt’s scorers were freshemen or sophomores. Also, Ashleigh Wetzel, Debbie Huss, and Erika Schneble were the top three finishers for Vanderbilt for the third straight week.

The Commodores have a week off then travel to South Bend, Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 3
