VU is now 2-2-1 overall, while San Diego remains undefeated at 4-0-1.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” /> The Commodores played San Diego in the blistering heat with temperatures up to 105 degrees. “I am very encouraged with our performance this weekend,” Head Coach Ronnie Hill said. “We fought so hard — I think it’s the hardest we’ve played in the three years we’ve been here at Vanderbilt. We’re so close.” The Commodores had scoring opportunities in regulation, but just couldn’t get the ball in goal. Vanderbilt totaled 13 shots in regulation, five on goal, led by Laura Hershenow and Molly Wilson with three each. Jennifer Lewis, Meghan Habig and Lauren Mitchell each totaled two shots and Erin Higgins numbered one shot. “We are very sound defensively and we’re very sound in the midfield — we just have to figure out how to score goals,” Hill said. San Diego totaled seven shots, including five on goal. The Toreros scored at the 100:58 mark when Alexis Obeji lofted the ball over VU goalkeeper Esther Thompson from 10 yards out. Thompson, who returned in goal this weekend after sustaining a concussion in the opening game of the season, totaled four saves in the contest. “We were very disciplined and organized on defense,” Hill added. “Kim Perkins played great in the center and back — she is such a gamer — and our back four did a great job.” Vanderbilt played #11 Arizona State to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Friday. The Commodores return home for a five-game homestand which begins Friday (Sept. 19) at 4 pm when the Commodores take on Tennessee Tech. Vanderbilt then hosts Western Kentucky Sunday (Sept. 21) at 4 pm. |
