Women’s Cross Country Team Wins Season Opener 9/5/2003 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s cross country team finished first at the Belmont Invitational held today at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. Vanderbilt finished with a time of 56:16.32 and a total of 46 point on the two-mile course, well ahead of second-place finisher U.A.B. (57:49.85, 100 pts.) Vanderbilt placed three runners in the top-10. Winning individual honors was Western Kentucky senior, Bonita Paul, who finished with a time of 10:57.37. The Commodores were led by freshmen Ashleigh Wetzel (11:00.76, third place), Debbie Huss (11:14.05, seventh), and sophomore Erika Schneble (11:14.96, eighth.) Also scoring for Vanderbilt were freshman Amy Huss (11:21.03, 12th), sophomore Caitlin Shannon (11:25.52, 16th), freshman Lauren Pence (11:26.89, 18th), and freshman Shannon Capps(11:27.27, 19th). Other finishers included, Nadiyah Humber (11:32.46, 20th), Jocelyn Theriault (11:33.82, 21st), Jackie Wachsman (11:38.00, 26th), Brittany Sizer (11:52.57, 35th), and Anna Bishop (12:18.09, 54th). After the meet Coach Spivey said, “the kids are glad it’s over, there were a lot of nerves going into today. We ran in packs and tried to be packs of wolves supporting one another, that was the most important thing for us. Ashleigh took charge and was very bold, especially for a freshman. Caitlin Shannon and Lauren Pence ran very well, they moved past about 10 runners in the last half mile. We had three freshmen and two sophomores in our top five. The kids were a little sore from our leg workout on Wednesday, but they did well today.” The Commodores host the Commodore Invitational on Saturday, September 13th in Nashville.
