Men’s Cross Country Team Opens Season at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s cross country team finished seventh at the Belmont Invitational held today at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. The Commodores finished with a time of 1:20:20.99 and a total of 173 points on the 5K course. Alabama earned team honors with 32 points and a time of 1:15:36.13. Alabama sophomore Josphat Waweru took home individual honors with a time of 14:44.61.

Vanderbilt was led by senior John Cote. Cote finished in 25th place with a time of 15:45.66. Also scoring for the Commodores were sophomore Tyler Harlan (15:58.23, 34th),sophomore Eric Walle (16:06.46, 36th), junior Matt Doll (16:10.74, 42nd), junior Taylor Hindle (16:19.90, 47th), freshman Mike Gabrys (16:33.38, 53rd), and junior Mike Gaske (16:43.79, 57th). Other finishers included, James Guthrie (18:08.44, 81st), and Jake LaManna (18:20.98, 87th).

Afterwards Coach Don Bailey described the meet as “a good starting point for us. We’ve got to have a starting point to show us where we’re at. I was not particularly pleased with the individual placings, but times were there and we’re close.”

The Commodores host the Commodore Invitational on Saturday, September 13th in Nashville.
