Commodore Men’s Soccer Plays to 0-0 tie in Double Overtime

Burlington, VT — The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime tie against host Vermont in the opening round of the Vermont University Smith Barney Soccer Classic.  It is the second double overtime tie for the Commodores this season who recorded a 1-1 double overtime tie vs. DePaul in the season opener.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The Commodores totaled 23 shots, including five shots on goal, led by senior Jimmy Stone with five.  Sophomore Kyle Lapkewych numbered four shots, followed by junior Ryan Paugh — who played in his first game of the season — with three.

“We played well defensively and we created opportunities, but we just didn’t finish it,” head coach Tim McClements said.  “We had our chances — we just have to get our timing down.”

Freshman Conor Ellinger played the entire game in goal and numbered six saves in the contest.  In two games played this season, Ellinger totals 220 minutes and 11 saves for a 0-0-2 record.

The Commodores take on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />New Hampshire Sunday (Sept. 7) in the final round of the Vermont Classic at 11:30 am ET.  VU hosts Lipscomb Friday (Sept. 12) in the Commodore’s home opener at 7 pm at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex
