New coach joins track and field

Sept. 28, 2011

Donnie Young joins the Vanderbilt women’s track and field program as the new sprints, hurdles, and relays coach under head coach Steve Keith.

“What interested me about Donnie, he has a great enthusiasm, he has a great knowledge of the sport, and he’s got a great plan,” said Keith. “That kind of combination of those elements will go a long way in terms of building the sprint/hurdle program.”

“We’re committing to building out track program to be as competitive as our cross country program,” continued Keith. “We’ve got a challenge ahead of us over the next three to four years, and Donnie is one that I think can help us get there.”

Young previously worked at Bowling Green State University in 2010, where he helped the Falcons earn their highest finish at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship meet as many of the athletes topped personal records under his direction.

He also worked at his old alma mater, Archbold High School, where seven of his athletes finished in first as the team won their conference championship. Before that, he was a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan University in 2008 and 2009. While at Eastern Michigan, Young was a four-year letter winning and a co-captain for the team.
