Fayetteville, Ark. – Sophomore Carmen Mims lowered her personal best in the 3,000 meters by more than six seconds while finishing third at the Tyson Invitational Saturday at the University of Arkansas.
Mims became the fifth fastest Commodore ever at the distance indoors with the 9:46.66 effort. Finishing behind eventual winner Jill Steffens of Georgia, Mims defeated several other Southeastern Conference competitors, including Sarah Madebach of Georgia and Jackie Areson and Kelly Parrish, both of Tennessee.
“That was an excellent effort from Carmen and I’m really proud of how she ran the race,” Vanderbilt distance coach Steve Keith said. “She went out with a good solid pace, then took care of the Georgia (Madebach) runner at the end. This is a nice step forward for Carmen as we prepare for the SECs.”
The conference championships, which is scheduled Feb. 22-24 at the University of Kentucky, is expected to feature deep and talented women’s fields at 3,000 and 5,000 meters. While Mims and teammate Brittany Sizer are likely entrants in the 3,000, fifth-year Commodore Erika Schneble is hoping to compete at both distances at the SEC meet.
Sizer also competed in the 800 and mile at the Tyson meet, running a personal best of 2:17.72 in the 800. She also ran 5:00.37 in the mile.
