MG: VU Hosts Mason Rudolph Sunday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodore men’s golf team plays host to the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, beginning this Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Vanderbilt Legends Club of Tennessee.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on the 7,100-yard, par-71 layout of the Roper’s Knob Course, designed by renowned architect Bob Cupp and 1992 U.S. Open champion Tom Kite.

The 17-team field features defending champion Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, UT-Chattanooga, Notre Dame, Toledo, Louisville, North Florida, UNC-Greensboro, South Alabama, Mercer, Iowa State, Augusta State, Belmont, Western Kentucky and Southeastern Louisiana. A total of 93 players will take part in the event. Vanderbilt will field two five-man squads while unattached individuals from Notre Dame, UT-Chattanooga and Louisville will also compete.

The event begins at 8 a.m. CT Sunday morning. Vanderbilt, South Alabama and Louisville will be the initial group teeing off on the first hole. MTSU, UT-Chattanooga and Western Kentucky will leave at the same time from the 10th tee.

Other groupings include: Ole Miss, Augusta State and Mississippi (8:45 a.m., first tee); Iowa State, Toledo, UNC-Greensboro (8:45 a.m., 10th tee); North Florida, Southeastern Louisiana and Notre Dame (9:30 a.m., first tee); and Vanderbilt “B” Team, Mercer and Belmont (9:30 a.m., 10th tee). Complete tee time sheets will be available on Saturday afternoon.

Teams are scheduled for a practice round on Saturday afternoon followed by a pre-tournament banquet.

Ole Miss captured the 2006 Mason Rudolph championship by eight strokes over Vanderbilt and North Florida. UT-Chattanooga and Memphis rounded out the top five. Silas Sutton of Mercer and Kyle Peterman of Memphis shared medalist honors, beating VU’s Luke List and MTSU’s Chas Narramore by two shots. Commodore Jon Curran placed fifth in the event.
