The Commodore men’s golf team travels to Birmingham, Ala., this Monday and Tuesday to participate in the Jerry Pate Collegiate Invitational at the Old Overton Country Club. Vanderbilt will take on one of the nation’s toughest fields with 36 holes of competition set for Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

“The guys are really excited about the opportunity to go compete on a great golf course against a great field,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Old Overton is an awesome golf course and a great test.”

The JPCI field includes the last two national champions, Alabama (2013, ranked #1 this year) and Texas (2012), number two-ranked Texas A&M, number 12 UAB, and number 16 UNLV. The Commodores, ranked 17th in the latest Golfweek poll, will play with the Crimson Tide and Longhorns for the 36 holes on Monday

Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, Charlotte, and Texas-San Antonio close out the field in Birmingham at Old Overton. The golf course will be set up as a par-70, 7,204-yard layout for the 54-hole event.

Vanderbilt will send senior Charlie Ewing, juniors Hunter Stewart and Jordan Janico, sophomore Zack Jaworski, and freshman Matthias Schwab to compete this week.

“Our focus has been on doing the simple things correctly,” said Limbaugh. “I feel that is the most important thing this week and going forward for this team.”

The tournament begins with a shotgun start on Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. CT, with live results found on Golfstat.com.
