First Round Results

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Vanderbilt picked up where they left off from the spring of 2015 and find themselves in a tie for the top of the leader board at the fifth annual Carmel Cup at the world-renown Pebble Beach Golf Links after carding a first-round total of three-under par, 357, on Friday. The Commodores are tied with Arkansas for the first round lead, and hold a four-shot lead on third-place Georgia and Oklahoma State.

The Commodores, coming off of their most successful season in program history a year ago, were led by senior Carson Jacobs, who carded a two-under par, 70, in his first round at Pebble Beach on Friday. Jacobs posted five birdies in his round and is in a tie for second on the individual leader board with Georgia’s Jaime Lopez Rivarola and Sepp Straka and one shot behind leader Alvaro Ortiz of Arkansas.

“It was a really a good team effort today with all six guys competing,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh, whose team led the field in birdies with 23 on the day. “We talked about focusing on the right things from the get go and I thought the guys did a great job with that.”

Junior Matthias Schwab and senior Zack Jaworski each carded a one-under par, 71, and are in a tie for fifth. Sophomore Theo Humphrey finished his first round with an even-par, 72, and freshman Patrick Martin was the team’s last counting score with a one-over, 73. Freshman Will Gordon was one shot behind Martin after shooting a 74.

“Carson led the way for us and set the tone for the team,” said Limbaugh. “Theo, Zack, and Matthias were great all day as well. I was excited to see Will and Patrick in their college debut and they both played solid. Overall it was a great day and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

The second round of the tournament continues at Pebble Beach on Saturday, with tee times beginning at 7:10 a.m. PT.
