LOS CABOS, Mexico – The 17th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team is in a tie for fourth place with Baylor after the first round of the Querrencia Cabo Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico with a team score of 296. Senior Charlie Ewing led the Commodores on Sunday and is in a tie for second on the individual leader board after firing a first-round, one-under par, 70.

The Commodores trail team leaders SMU and Houston by eight strokes heading into the second round on Monday in a field that features eight teams in the top 32 teams in the country.

“First of all, it was a good test out there today with the wind,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “You have to be resilient out here. The guys did a lot of really good things today and got off to a solid start. We didn’t finish as well as we wanted to, but we will learn from that and get better.”

Ewing had five birdies and four bogeys in his round on Sunday, and trails individual leader Roman Robledo of Houston by two strokes. Freshman Matthias Schwab carded a first-round 73 and is in a tie for 15th, junior Hunter Stewart fired a 76 (T-33rd), sophomore Carson Jacobs a 77 (T-46), and sophomore Zack Jaworski put together a round of 78 (T-54).

“Charlie played a really good round that was a big lift for our team and Matthias was solid,” said Limbaugh.

The Commodores will tee it up in round two on Monday at 8 a.m. PT in a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
