Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw announced the signing of Ben Fogler and Hunter Stewart to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Both will be eligible to compete for the Commodores beginning in the fall of 2011.

Fogler, from Spring Valley High School in Eglin, S.C. and the son of former Vanderbilt head basketball coach Eddie Fogler, had seven top 20 AJGA finishes in his junior career, including a second place at the 2010 North & South Junior Championship and a fifth (2009) and 11th place finish at the Bobby Chapman Invitational. He also won medalists honors at the 2010 South Carolina – Georgia Cup High School Invitational.

Academically, Fogler is a National Merit Scholarship Qualifier and a member of the National Honor Society, and carries a 4.8 GPA.

“Ben Fogler was made for Vanderbilt,” said Shaw. “He is a decorated scholar and one of the best junior golfers in the South. Ben will thrive in the Vanderbilt environment and will play a huge role in pushing our team toward the top of the SEC. His golf skills, work ethic, and quality character make him a natural fit with our team.”

Stewart, from Lexington Christian Academy in Nicholasville, Ky., was Kentucky’s “Mr. Golf” in 2010 and was named by the Kentucky High School Coaches Association as their Most Outstanding Senior in 2010. He was also a member of the KHSAA All-State team in 2010.

Stewart also had a stellar junior career, finishing fourth at the 2009 Bubba Conlee, second at the 2009 Kentucky Junior, and third at the 2010 Kentucky State Junior. He also qualified for the 2010 US Open Sectional by placing fourth in the local qualifier.

Off the course, Stewart was an Academic All-State first team selection in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

“Hunter is a terrific young man who has really become a great player in the last year,” said Shaw. “He dominated the Kentucky golf scene with record scores and also played well nationally, with some great finishes across the South . Off the course, his leadership skills and outstanding character will serve our team well.”
