WINDERMERE, Fla. – Junior Ben Fogler and freshman Matthias Schwab each shot a two-under par, 70, to lead the 20th-ranked Commodores on the first day of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. Vanderbilt is in a tie for sixth on the team leader board with Arkansas with a score of 287 in a field that features nine of the top 30 teams in America.

Fogler and Schwab, who are both in a tie for 10th in the individual standings, got to their two-under par in different ways on Sunday. Fogler posted two birdies and 16 pars in his initial 18 holes at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club, while Schwab had five birdies, 11 pars, a bogey, and a double-bogey in his round.

“Obviously, Ben and Matthias were really solid,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Ben didn’t make a bogey which is pretty special out here. Matthias played solid and did a good job battling it back and finished strong. It was a good day for our team and tomorrow is another opportunity to compete.”

The Commodores, who are only one stroke back of fifth-place UNLV and three shots back of a tie for third, also counted a one-over par, 73, from junior Hunter Stewart and a two-over, 74, from junior Jordan Janico. Senior Charlie Ewing fired a four-over, 76, in his round on Sunday.

Defending national champion and number-one ranked Alabama leads all teams in the field after shooting an eight-under, 280, as a team, two strokes better than second-place UCF. On the individual leader board, the Crimson Tide’s Trey Mullinax and California’s Joel Stalter lead all players after the duo each carded a six-under, 66, in the first round.

“Our message this week has been to be excellent in controlling what we can control,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought we did a great job of that today with our body language, self talk, and overall attitudes.”

The second round of the tournament continues on Monday, with Vanderbilt set to tee off beginning at 8 a.m. ET on the first tee with LSU and Texas.
