GULF SHORES, Ala. – Sophomore Ben Fogler is tied for fifth on the individual leader board with a total of 145 (69-75) and paced the Commodores into third place with a team total of 589 (289-300) after the first 36 holes of the Arkansas State University Fall Beach Classic on Monday at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Vanderbilt trails co-leaders Murray State and Stephen F. Austin by one stroke heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

“We played a solid first round lead by Ben’s 69,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We didn’t have our best games but the guys managed to hang in there. In the afternoon, we simply just didn’t play to our standard. We have to continue to demand more of ourselves and not accept average. We have a great opportunity in tomorrow’s final round and we need to be more resilient.”

Fogler’s 69 was the low round of the morning for the opening 18 holes of the tournament. The Commodores led after the first round after counting a 72 from Charlie Ewing, who is in a tie for seventh overall, a 73 from Hunter Stewart, and a 75 from John Voetsch.

The Commodores shot a second-round 300, which was 11 shots worse than their opening round and nine more than Stephen F. Austin and Murray State, who lead the tournament. Vanderbilt counted a pair of 74’s from Ewing and Janico, and two 76’s from Fogler and Stewart.

Individually, Tolver Dozier from Troy leads the tournament after firing a five-under par, 139. Dozier holds a three stroke lead over Patrick Newcomb of Murray State.

The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
