MG in 3rd after round one of Tavistock

First Round Results

WINDERMERE, Fla. – The #3-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team was one of only four teams under par on Sunday in the first round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational and are in a tie for third place on the team leader board with a two-under par, 286, in a field that features four of the top nine teams in the nation. Senior Matthias Schwab, sophomore Patrick Martin, and freshman John Augenstein each led the team with a one-under par, 71.

The Commodores carded 14 birdies on the day at the par-72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Country Club, with Martin posting five birdies on the day. Vanderbilt led the field in par five scoring (4.70) and total pars (63). Besides Schwab, Martin, and Augenstein’s 71’s, Vanderbilt also counted a one-over, 73, from junior Theo Humphrey.

“We asked our guys to find a way to stick around on this course,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I feel as long as you compete and fight this game lets you stick around. We had all five guys competing and sticking around today and I think that was huge in how we finished. We started solid, made a few mental mistakes midway through the round, then I thought we showed some grit in how we finished. I’m extremely proud of John and how he managed himself after he double bogeyed #1. Matthias and Patrick were really solid as well and both finished very strong. We know we will have to be more consistent in our performance tomorrow in order for us to be successful.”

Vanderbilt is tied with North Florida for third, and trail first place Florida and Purdue by three shots heading into the second round on Monday. The Commodores will tee off with North Texas and Florida on Monday at 8:25 a.m. ET off of the 10th tee. Individually, Schwab, Martin, and Augenstein are all tied for ninth at one-under, with Texas Tech’s Hannes Ronneblad leading all individuals after a first-round 67.

The second round of the tournament continues on Monday morning from Isleworth.
