TEMPE, Ariz. – The Commodores’ historical 2012-13 season came to end on Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz., at the NCAA Southwest Regional, when Vanderbilt finished in a tie for 10th after three rounds of play with a final score of 854 (283-286-285). The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championship May 28-June 2 in Atlanta.
Vanderbilt, who won three team tournaments in 2012-13 under first-year head coach Scott Limbaugh, fired a final-round 285 and were led by sophomore Jordan Janico and freshman Zack Jaworski, who each fired an even-par 70 on Saturday. Jaworski was the Commodores’ top finisher for the tournament, ending the event in a tie for 30th with a two-over par, 212 (72-70-70).
“I really was proud of how this group fought until the very end just as they have all year,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We are obviously disappointed that we didn’t get the job done, but it was certainly a great learning experience for a young team.”
Sophomore Hunter Stewart (68-73-73) and junior Charlie Ewing (72-70-72) each ended the regional in a tie for 38th with a total of 214, while sophomore Ben Fogler finished in a tie for 47th with a 217 (71-73-73) and Janico ended the tournament in a tie for 54th with a 220 (77-73-70).
UCLA went wire-to-wire to win the Tempe Regional with a final score of 810, 17 strokes better than second-place Georgia and UCF. Texas A&M and Arizona State also qualified for the NCAA Championship in two weeks in Atlanta. Dustin Korte of Austin Peay qualified as the individual from the regional with a final total of 204 (64-71-69).
Greg Eason of the UCF Knights won medalist honors this weekend with a final score of 12-under par, 198.
“I am so proud of this group and how they responded to me from day one,” said Limbaugh about his first season at the helm of the Commodores. “I challenged them to lay a foundation for this program and they gave me everything they had this entire year. As a coach, it is really all that you can ask for. I have never been more proud of a team.”
