MG finishes sixth at Querencia Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team ended the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Tuesday with the tournament’s low round of the day and finished the event in sixth place with a total of one-under par, 851 (294-275-282). Junior Matthias Schwab carded a team-low 68 in the final round and finished the tournament as the Commodores’ top finisher with an eighth-place finish and a final total of 210 (73-69-68).

Vanderbilt’s two-under par, 282, was the tournament’s best round by a shot, edging out Baylor and California. The Commodores counted a 68 from Schwab, a 70 from sophomore Theo Humphrey, and a pair of 72’s from freshmen Patrick Martin and Will Gordon.

Martin ended the tournament in 12th place individually with a 212 (72-68-72), while Gordon finished a shot back in 13th with a total of 213 (72-69-72). Humphrey ended the tournament with a 218 (79-69-70), which tied him for 28th, and senior Carson Jacobs finished the tournament with a 238 (77-83-78).

“The guys played really well today and were able to shoot the low round of the day,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Matthias played great the entire tournament and I am happy to see him finish with a solid round. Also, Theo showed a ton of resiliency the last two days, especially after his opening round. Patrick and Will are getting better every time we play and they really stayed patient today in the face of adversity.”

Georgia claimed the team title with a final total of 834 (281-268-285), 10 shots better than South Florida. Individually, the Bull’s Aksel Olsen won medalist honors with a final score of 204 (68-67-69).

Vanderbilt is back in action March 18-20 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

“We definitely aren’t where we need to be as a team yet, but we took another good step this week,” said Limbaugh. “This is a hard game and we had a tough day the first round. However, the guys competed and finished strong that day and gave us momentum that allowed us to have two good rounds. Our focus the next couple of weeks needs to be on improving and believing in our journey.”
