LOS CABOS, Mexico – The 17th-ranked finished the Querrencia Cabo Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico in a tie for fifth place with SMU with a team total of 875 (296-290-289). Senior Charlie Ewing was the team’s leading scorer for the week, finishing in a tie for fourth after carding a two-over par, 214 (70-71-73), and all five Commodore players ended the tournament in the top 30 individually.

Vanderbilt finished 12 strokes back of team champion Houston, who finished the event with a score of 863 (288-285-290).

“We had a character building day today and all week,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “This golf course is very intimidating off the tee and very penal if you miss a fairway. When things are hard it makes you better and you learn what you are made of. It’s all about how you respond to getting knocked down and I like what I learned about our team.”

Sophomore Zack Jaworski had the team’s best round on Tuesday, carding a third-round 71. Fellow sophomore Carson Jacobs shot a 72 on Tuesday, with the Commodores also counting a pair of 73’s from Ewing and junior Hunter Stewart. Freshman Matthias Schwab finished with a 74 on Tuesday.

“This was a total team effort with all five guys finishing in the top thirty,” said Limbaugh. “Charlie got off to a tough start today, hung in there and played his last eight holes 2-under. Carson and Zack hung in there all day and gave our team a spark when we needed it.

“We need to really work hard on our short games this next week inside of 150 yards because that is where we need to improve the most in order to compete every week.”

Houston’s Roman Robledo won medalist honors after shooting a four-under par, 209 (68-68=73), one stroke better than Baylor’s Kyle Jones.

Vanderbilt returns to the course March 16-17 at the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.
