MG finishes fifth in Mississippi

MADISON, Miss. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team shot a seven-over 295 on Tuesday to finish fifth at the 2008 Bank of America Intercollegiate, hosted at the Reunion Golf and Country Club.

The Commodores stayed in the top third of the 15-team field for the entire two-day, 54-hole event. Vanderbilt’s eight-over total of 872 edged UAB by one stroke.

UT-Chattanooga won the team event at 12-under. LSU was the only other team below par for the week. North Florida and host Ole Miss tied for third place at one-over.

Individually, junior All-American Jon Curran paced the Commodores. His even-par 216 total was good for 13th place. Senior Billy Whalen also finished in the Top 20, placing in a tie for 17th at one-over. Whalen entered Tuesday in the top five before a six-over 78 in the final round.

Senior Brett Lange and sophomore Hudson Johnson both finished at six-over (tied for 35th). Lange carded a one-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for VU’s low score of the day.

Senior John Ebert also scored for the Commodores on Tuesday, shooting a three-over 75 for the final 18 holes.

UAB’s Zach Sucher took medalist honors, beating Jonathan Randolph of Ole Miss by two strokes. A total of 16 players finished at par or better.

The Bank of America Intercollegiate closes out the Commodores’ 2007-08 regular season. Vanderbilt next plays in the 2008 Southeastern Conference Championships beginning on Friday, April 18, in Sea Island, Ga.
