PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Commodore men’s golf team finished their opening tournament of the 2015-16 season, the fifth annual Carmel Cup, in third place with a final team total of 1,082 (357-364-361; Six counting five) on Sunday at world renown Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif. Vanderbilt was led by junior Matthias Schwab, who tied Texas Tech’s Hannes Ronneblad and Georgia’s Greyson Sigg for first after carding a two-under par, 214 (71-72-71) for the tournament.

Schwab moved up seven spots individually after his third-round 71, a steady day that included two birdies and a bogey, to make a three-man sudden-death playoff. The junior from Rohrmoos, Austria, and Ronneblad each made bogey on the first playoff hole, while Sigg made par to come away with the individual title.

Schwab was joined in the top 10 by a pair of freshmen, Patrick Martin and Will Gordon, who finished in a tie for fourth and 10th, respectively. Martin ended his first collegiate event with a final total of 215 (73-71-71), while Gordon ended the tournament with a one-over, 217 (74-74-69). Gordon’s third-round 69 tied for the low round of the day and allowed the freshman to gain 16 positions on the individual leader board. Martin moved up 11 positions after his third-round 71.

As a team, Vanderbilt finished one shot behind second-place Georgia and seven strokes back of team champion Oklahoma State.

“We played solid today as a team especially the last seven holes,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought Gordo showed a lot of maturity today in how he handled himself and how that contributed to the team. Patrick was very solid as well in his first tournament and that’s very exciting for us. I mean Matthias continues to show why he is so special and fun to coach.”

Other Commodore finishers included senior Zack Jaworski’s 219 (71-72-76, 22), sophomore Theo Humphrey’s 221 (72-75-74, T-27), and senior Carson Jacob’s 232 (70-83-79).

“I think we have some great building blocks to have a really good team,” said Limbaugh. “I also know there are a lot of areas we can improve in so that’s encouraging and we know to do that we need the right buy-in from everyone.”

Vanderbilt returns to the course September 25-27 at the Golf Club of Tennessee for the DICK’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup.
