Final Results

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished the 2016 edition of the SEC Championship in eighth place with a final total of 874 (286-294-294) on Sunday at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons, Ga. Junior Matthias Schwab led the way for the Commodores at the tournament with a final score of 217 (66-74-77), which tied him for 13th place.

Freshman Will Gordon was next with a 219 (70-72-77), which tied him for 25th. Other Commodore finishers included Theo Humphrey’s 223 (78-73-72, T-38), Carson Jacobs’ 223 (75-75-73, T-38), and Patrick Martin’s 225 (75-78-72, T-52). Humphrey and Martin tied for the team low on Sunday, with each carding a two-over par, 72.

“I am proud of how the guys fought until the very end today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I think that shows a lot about their competitive character. We simply didn’t play good golf this week, which unfortunately, came at a tough time. However, the mistakes we made this week are very correctable and we look forward to continuing our journey. There are no excuses though. We didn’t play to our standards.”

Georgia won the team title with a final score of 853 (277-291-285), finishing three shots in front of runner-up Texas A&M. The Bulldogs’ Lee McCoy won medalist honors with a final score of three-under par, 207.

Next up for Vanderbilt is the NCAA Regional, which the Commodores will host at the Vanderbilt Legends Club May 16-18 on the North Course.

“We have to have the right attitude going forward and stay committed to being the best we can be because we are a good team,” said Limbaugh. “I think it’s important that we stay positive and grow from this week because anybody can be a frontrunner. It shows toughness to be able grow from this adversity.

“We will take some time over the next couple of weeks to finish the academic year well and rest our bodies, then begin our preparation for the next step in our season. In my opinion, this team will be remembered by how it responds and finishes from here on out. It will be exciting to host NCAA Regionals next month in front of our fans!”
