MG drops semifinal match at East Lake Cup

Match Play Results

ATLANTA – The number-one ranked Vanderbilt Commodores dropped its semifinal match at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta, Ga., 3-2, to the defending national champion Oregon Ducks on Tuesday afternoon. Vanderbilt will play Texas on Wednesday in a consolation match.

Vanderbilt received points from sophomore Patrick Martin, who defeated Nigel Lett, 5 and 4, and Matthias Schwab, who won his match over Sulman Raza, 2 & 1. Oregon claimed the other three matches, with Edwin Yi defeating John Augenstein, 2 & 1, Ryan Gronlund knocking off Theo Humphrey, 2-up, with Wyndham Clark also taking his match with Will Gordon, 2-up.

“First off, I knew that Oregon would show up ready, and I challenged our guys to really try to try to have the right kind of mindset,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It’s man-on-man, five-on-five in this format. I think it was more of what they did today. We didn’t play great golf, and they went out and took advantage of that, and just beat us. You have to commend them for that. They were ready to play a good team. We were ready to play a good team, but they were just better today, and that is what athletics is all about.”

Vanderbilt will play Texas on Wednesday in a consolation match, which will begin at 10:15 CT. The match up with the Longhorns look like this:

Patrick Martin vs. Taylor Funk
Will Gordon vs. Scottie Scheffler
Matthias Schwab vs. Gavin Hall
John Augenstein vs. Doug Ghim
Theo Humphrey vs. Steven Chervony

Like the first two days of the tournament, live coverage of the tournament will begin at 2 p.m. CT from East Lake on the Golf Channel. Live stats can be found on Golfstat.com.

“Our SEC Championship is going to match play as well this year, and I was just talking to our guys, that if we are going to be the team that we want to be and know we can be, we’d rather feel like this right now at the East Lake Cup in November and learn and grow from it, then to feel this in April and May,” said Limbaugh. “It’s just important to me that we come out more focused tomorrow and just understanding it’s just one more day to grow to be the team we want to be.”
