PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Vanderbilt will take on UNLV Sunday morning at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Club for the Carmel Cup championship after finishing with a two-round total of 730 (363-367), two strokes behind the Running Rebels, who ended stroke play in first place with a 728 (363-365). Freshman Matthias Schwab captured the individual title, shooting a 68 at Spyglass Hill on Saturday afternoon in route to a 141 (73-68), which was three strokes better than Zane Thomas of UNLV.

Vanderbilt and UNLV will face off in match play beginning at 7:40 a.m. for the championship, with Texas Tech and Arizona vying for third place beginning at 7:10 a.m. Pacific time.

Schwab set the pace with his 141, but junior Hunter Stewart was not far behind, finishing in a tie for third with a 145 (71-74). Sophomore John Voetsch ended stroke play in a tie for eighth with a 146 (69-77), senior Charlie Ewing finished 10th with a 148 (75-73), junior Ben Fogler in a tie for 14th with a 151, and Zach Herr in 22nd with a 159 (75-84).

“Spyglass played tough this afternoon,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “I thought we hung in there very well and a couple of our guys finished really well. Unfortunately, we fell two shots short in the stroke play portion. However, we are looking forward to playing a very good UNLV team in the championship match tomorrow.

“I am really proud of Matthias,” said Limbaugh. “He showed us today why he is one of the top freshman in the country. He battled all day and was tied for lead with four holes to go and birdied three of last four holes to win by three.”

Pairings for Sunday’s championship are:
7:40 a.m. – Hunter Stewart vs. Carl Jonson; Charlie Ewing vs. Zane Thomas
7:50 a.m. – John Voetsch vs. A.J. McInerney; Ben Fogler vs. Taylor Montogomery
