SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three Commodores added their names to the record book this weekend at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Kristabel Doebel-Hickok, Taylor Jackson and Lauryn Smith each recorded times in their respective events that rank in the top six in school annals.
“I think our team is doing the right things and improving going into the conference indoor meet in a couple of weeks,” Vanderbilt track and field head coach D’Andre Hill said. “If we keep moving forward and get some stuff done next week, we’ll be in a good position going into the SECs. This past weekend gives us a huge stepping stone going forward.”
Running the 5,000 meters for the first time this season, Doebel-Hickok finished the event in 10th place with a time of 17:24.08. The mark places the freshman in sixth place on the Vanderbilt all-time indoor list in the 5,000-meter run.
“I thought it was a great first 5K for her,” Vanderbilt distance coach Steve Keith said. “I thought we set a manageable pace and I think the next time she runs the distance we can be more aggressive with the pace.”
Jackson, a freshman from Cleveland, Ohio, improved her season-best time in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.81. The time is the fifth-fastest indoor time in the 60 meters in school history.
Smith also added her name to the Vanderbilt record book in the 200-meter dash. The junior from Carrollton, Texas, ran the distance in 25.44, good for 29th-place overall. The time is the fifth-fastest indoor time in the event.
Also posting an impressive performance was freshman distance runner Rita Jorgensen. Running the anchor leg in the distance medley relay, Jorgensen ran a 4:51.9 mile and passed two teams to give the `Dores a ninth-place finish.
Val Kazmer improved her PR in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:12.21 while freshman Erin Guglielmo improved her season-best time in the 800 meters with a performance of 2:19.26. The 4×400 meter relay team of Amani Floyd, Lauren Fortson, Lauryn Smith and Sheri Sullivan ran a season-best time of 3:49.22, improving their time by seven seconds.
The Commodores return to action next weekend as split squads will travel to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Hoosiers Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
