The Commodore men's golf team finished the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in third place with a final score of 849 (293-278-288) on Tuesday at the Old Waverly Golf Club.

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Commodore men’s golf team finished the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in third place with a final score of 849 (293-278-288) on Tuesday at the Old Waverly Golf Club. Senior Will Gordon was the team’s best finisher for the week, ending the tournament in a tie for third with a total of 207 (72-69-66).  Fellow senior Patrick Martin also carded a top 10 finish after finishing in ninth place with a final score of 211 (67-70-74).

Vanderbilt finished three shots behind team champion Louisiana Monroe, and two shots back of runner-up Ole Miss.

“Today was certainly not what we wanted it to be, but certainly a learning opportunity for all of us,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Obviously, Gordo played a really great round that gave our team a chance. He’s played a lot of those for us and today was really good. I also thought the guys fought all the way to the finish line which is what we want to see.”

Individually, Middle Tennessee’s Marcus Byrd won medalist honors after posting a 13-under-par 203 (70-66-67).  He won the individual title by three shots over Ole Miss’ Jackson Suber.

Gordon’s third-place finish was his fifth top-five finish of the season, and Martin’s top-10 finish was his sixth this year.

“We know we have to improve and what we have to improve on before Championship season begins and that’s where our focus will be,” said Limbaugh.  “We are going to get home and have our focus on the right things.”

The Commodores’ trip to Mississippi is their last tournament of the regular season.  The postseason begins for Vanderbilt at the SEC Championships in Sea Island, Georgia April 24-28 at the Seaside Golf Club.
