Men's golf sixth after day one at WCU

SAPPHIRE, N.C. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in sixth place after day one of the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Three Commodores carded rounds of one-over 72 on Monday to stand in a tie for 26th place in the field of 102 golfers. Junior Ryan Haselden went two-under on the back nine, including birdies on 14 and 16, for his 72. Senior Hudson Johnson, the event’s 2008 medalist, had four bogeys against three birdies. Sophomore Ben Klaus made it to two-under with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole before dropping back to one-over.

Freshman Will Snipes was the other Commodore to score on Monday. His two-over 73 also included an eagle on the 14th hole. Sophomore Trey DelGreco’s three-over 74 was not counted in the Commodores’ team total.

Vanderbilt has finished in second place at the Hummingbird in each of the past two seasons. The Commodores will need to rally in Tuesday’s final round, but a good result is not out of reach.

With a team score of 289 (+5), Vanderbilt is 10 strokes back of day-one leader Kentucky (-5). The Wildcats hold a three-stroke lead over Furman (-2), with host Western Carolina, Winthrop and Akron tied for third at two-over.

The Commodores are scheduled to tee off at 10:03 a.m. ET with Winthrop and Akron.

The par-71 course is playing at 6,767 yards this week.
