Men's Golf Finishes Strong at Carpet Capital

ROCKY FACE, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team shot the low team score of Sunday’s final round to move up to ninth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.

The Commodores used four scores under par to total a 10-under tally of 278, tying Georgia Tech for the low round of the day.

Sophomore Jon Curran had Vanderbilt’s low round of the tournament, shooting a four-under 68 that included 12 pars and five birdies. For the tournament, Curran finished in a tie for sixth place at six-under (210).

Freshman Hudson Johnson also posted a Top 20 individual finish, carding a two-under 70 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 11th at four-under (212). Johnson was the only Commodore to score under par in all three rounds.

Senior Luke List came in at three-under on Sunday, including an eagle on the par-five 12th hole. List finished in a tie for 41st at two-over (218).

Junior Billy Whalen shaved 13 strokes off his second round score to card a one-under 71 in the final round. He and junior Brett Lange finished in a tie for 83rd.

Individually, Georgia’s Chris Kirk posted a five-under 67 on Sunday to edge North Carolina State’s Darren Blair by one stroke.

In the team competition, Alabama’s eight-under round on Sunday led the Crimson Tide to a six-strokes victory over Clemson. Georgia, host Georgia Tech, Florida and Georgia State rounded out the top six.

The tournament field included nine teams that closed the 2005-06 season in the nation’s Top 20, including No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Georgia Tech.
