Men's Golf finishes 10th at SEC's

ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished in 10th place at the 2008 Southeastern Conference Championship, played at the Frederica Golf Club.

Junior All-American Jon Curran bounced back from a pair of non-scoring performances on Friday and Saturday to lead the Commodores on Sunday with an even-par 72.

Sophomore Hudson Johnson shot a two-over 74 on Sunday, finishing the event at plus-five and in a tie for 25th place. Junior Tyler Matthews had the low score of the weekend for Vanderbilt, finishing at four-over for 54 holes to place 24th.

Senior Brett Lange also scored for the Commodores on Sunday with a four-over 76. Senior Billy Whalen was the fifth competitor for Vanderbilt. His five-over 77 did not count towards VU’s team score in the final round.

Alabama’s Michael Thompson earned individual medalist honors by four strokes over teammate Joseph Sykora and George Bryan IV of South Carolina. The Crimson Tide won the team championship by eight strokes over second-place South Carolina. Georgia, Florida and Mississippi State rounded out the top five.
