Vanderbilt's win streak ends at four with loss to Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 34 Vanderbilt men’s tennis suffered a 7-0 defeat to No. 4 Texas in its SEC Opener on Saturday.

The Longhorns opened the matchup securing the doubles point, marking just the second time this season the Dores have not captured an opening advantage. Texas swiftly rattled off wins at its No. 5, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions to seal the match. The win is the Longhorns’ fifth over a top-50 team so far this season.

Vanderbilt forced tiebreakers in multiple ranked matchups ahead of the finish. No. 98-ranked junior Nathan Cox jumped out to an early lead at No. 1 singles over No. 7 Timo Legout with a 6-4 first set. The Longhorn trailed for much of the second set before pulling out the frame 6-3. Legout fended off Cox’s upset bid with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory. At No. 3 singles, freshman Pablo Martinez Gomez erased an early deficit against No. 33 Jonah Braswell, capturing the second set 6-2 after dropping the opener. The tiebreaker again fell the way of Texas, as Braswell pulled away 10-8 to deliver a Longhorn sweep.

Vanderbilt (7-3, 0-1 SEC) continues its conference road trip with a noon match at LSU (7-4, 0-1 SEC) on Monday. For more information, updates, and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
