Sacramento, Calif. – Josie Hahn’s quest to represent the United States in the upcoming Olympics ended Saturday when she finished 20th overall in the heptathlon.

Hahn, a resident of Clinton, Tenn., totalled 5,292 points, well shy of her school record set two weeks ago in Provo, Utah.

Much like the first day of activities Friday, Hahn started slowly Saturday with a disappointing effort in the long jump. Needing to approach a personal best in the event, Hahn managed only a leap of 16’8″, nearly two feet short of her previous best.

Hahn did respond in the final two events, adding a solid 136’6″ toss in the javelin and concluding the heptathlon with an excellent 2:19.99 effort in the 800-meter run.

The top three finishers – Sheila Burrell, Tiffany Lott-Hogan and Michelle Perry – will represent the United States in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in Greece later this summer. Georgia standout Hyleas Fountain narrowly missed making the team, finishing fourth overall.

Hahn’s performance Saturday closes a remarkable season for the rising senior. In 2004, Hahn established five new Vanderbilt team records, captured the Southeastern Conference heptathlon individual title and earned NCAA All-America honors in the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Hahn also became just the second Vanderbilt student to compete at the U.S. track and Field Olympic Trials.

The first Commodore to achieve the honor, Ryan Tolbert-Jackson, also witnessed her chances of making the U.S. team end Saturday as she finished 11th in the 400-meter hurdles. The top eight finishers advanced to the finals Sunday.
