NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Two Commodore women distance runners, freshman Rita Jorgensen and junior Carmen Mims, captured individual races in a driving rainstorm during the first day of action at the Vanderbilt Invitation track and field meet Friday.

Jorgensen, from Memphis, Tenn., won the 3,000 meters in 9:51.27, seven seconds ahead of runnerup Jackie Areson of Tennessee. Jorgensen, who posted a NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 1,500 meters earlier this spring, becomes the fifth fastest Commodore at 3,000 meters.

Mims won the 5,000 meters in 17:26.24, topping two Commodore freshmen Kristabel Doebel-Hickok and Adrienne DiRaddo, who ran second and third in 17:36.40 and 17:39.60, respectively.

Before the heavy rains arrived, two men’s records were broken. In the pole vault, Joe Berry of Tennessee cleared 17’1″ in a winning effort to surpass the former mark. Minutes earlier, the long jump standard fell when former Illinois State standout and current Eastern Illinois assistant coach JaRod Tobler jumped 26’2.75″.

Action at the 2008 Vanderbilt Track & Field Invitational continues tomorrow at the Vanderbilt Track. Events are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. CT on Saturday.

Organizers expect clear skies on Saturday after rain and windy conditions prevailed for much of Friday evening.
