OXFORD, Miss. – Freshmen Rita Jorgensen and Kristabel Doebel-Hickok picked up victories to lead the Vanderbilt track and field team at the Mississippi Open on Saturday in Oxford.
Jorgensen continued her impressive freshman campaign by winning the 800 meters. The Memphis, Tenn., native recorded a time of 2:13.33, six tenths of a second ahead of the second place finisher.
The Commodores posted a 1-2 finish in the 5000 meters. Doebel-Hickok finished first with a time of 17:41.63. Fellow Commodore Carmen Mims recorded a runner-up finish, running the distance in 17:52.44.
Sophomore Cherice Robertson lowered her personal best time in the 100-meter hurdles. Robertson finished the event in fourth place with a time of 14.02 seconds.
The Black and Gold placed three runners in the top 10 of the 1500 meters. Valerie Kazmer finished in sixth, lowering her season best time to 4:39.82. Adrienne DiRaddo also lowered her personal best time in the event with a time of 4:42.57, finishing in seventh. Kate Southcote-Want posted a season-best time with a mark of 4:45.15, finishing in ninth. Amanda Scott finished just outside the top 10, finishing in 11th with a time of 4:46.34.
The Commodores open up competition at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 15.
