Vanderbilt’s Cherrelle Jarrett has been named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer All-Freshman Team, league officials announced this week.
“This is a great honor for Cherrelle,” VU Head Coach Derek Greene said. “She certainly proved herself to be one of the toughest midfielders in the league this year. Her ability to win tackles and battle in the air clearly stood out to the coaches within the league. We’re very proud of Cherellee for what she accomplished this year and excited about her future.”
After logging 60 minutes in the Commodores’ first game of the season, Jarrett earned a spot in Vanderbilt’s starting lineup that she would not relinquish the rest of the year. The Lilburn, Ga., native logged 1,527 minutes this season, ranking second on the team behind only junior CJ Rhoades. Jarrett played all 90 minutes of eight game this year, including six SEC contests.
Coming forward from her position as a defensive midfielder, Jarrett scored two goals during her first season in Nashville. She scored one of Vanderbilt’s three goals as the Commodores went 2-0 in the South Florida Tournament in Tampa this September. Jarrett also scored Vanderbilt’s final goal of the season, bringing the Commodores even with Kentucky (2-2) at the two minutes into the second half.
Commodore soccer has put at least one player on the SEC All-Freshman team in each of the past five seasons. Last year, defender Claire Romaine was so honored. Romaine played in only four games this season before being forced out of the lineup by an injury.
