MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore Jordan Janico shot a three-under par, 69, in his final round of the Memphis Intercollegiate and vaulted into a tie for second on the individual leader board with a final total of 221 (74-78-69) to conclude the event on Tuesday at the Colonial Country Club.
As a team, Vanderbilt finished in fifth place with a final total of 912 (306-312-294), and had the tournament’s third-lowest final-round total.
“I’m really pleased with the rounds that Hunter and JJ played, which gave us an opportunity to have a great day,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Unfortunately, as a group, we didn’t finish the round to our standard. As we continue to make the climb it is so important to continue to demand more from ourselves and each other.”
Janico had five birdies in his final round, while posting only two bogeys. Janico’s second-place finish is his career-best, with his previous best coming at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in October of 2012, when he ended that tournament in a tie for ninth place. His final-round 69 was one of only four rounds in the 60’s.
Freshman John Voetsch, who was playing as an individual, also carded his best-career finish with an eighth-place finish. Voetsch fired the second-best round of his career in the second round, when he shot a 74.
“I’m proud of how John responded to having a chance to compete,” said Limbaugh.
Sophomore Hunter Stewart, the team’s leading scorer, recovered from two tough rounds with a five-under par, 67, on Tuesday, the tournament’s best single-round total. He finished in a tie for 12th with a final total of 226 (78-81-67).
The Commodores’ other counting scores in Tuesday’s final round were a pair of 79’s from Ben Fogler and Mills Rendell.
Austin Peay won the team tournament with a final score of 897 (303-297-297), two strokes better than second-place Louisiana-Lafayette. The Governors’ Dustin Korte claimed medalist honors with a two-over, 218 (71-75-72).
The Commodores will tee it up in their final regular season tournament of the season April 8th and 9th at the Jim West Intercollegiate in Dallas.
