Janico, Ewing sign with Shaw's men's golf team

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Head Men’s Golf Coach Tom Shaw announced the addition of two prep standouts Thursday, as Jordan Janico (Duluth, Ga.) and Charlie Ewing (Dallas, Texas) signed National Letters of Intent to play golf for the Commodores next season.

“Jordan Janico and Charlie Ewing both represent the blueprint of the successful Vanderbilt golfer,” Shaw said. “They are young men of high character, accomplished students in the classroom, and gifted golfers on the course.”

A product of Mount Pisgah Christian School, Janico (pictured right) has captured eight Southeastern Junior Golf Tour (SJGT) titles, including a record-setting 13-under (62-67–129) at the Huntsville Invitational in June. He has earned All-State honors and been named the team’s Most Valuable Player twice. In July, Janico was the runner-up at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Nationwide, his fourth Top 10 finish in an AJGA ranked event. Off the course, Janico is a straight-A student and member of the National Honor Society.

“Jordan has shown the ability to overpower a golf course with his superior length and post some incredibly low scores,” Shaw noted. “He is a promising young talent that will impact our squad right away.”

Ewing is a team captain for the Highland Park High School golf team, which earned runner-up honors in the 2009 Class 4A state tournament. He earned medalist honors at the 2009 Austin Fall Preview Golf Tournament and the 2009 Texarkana “The Classic”. Ewing also recently placed 11th in the prestigious Bart Granger Invitational.

“Complementing Jordan will be an equally gifted player in Charlie Ewing,” Shaw said. “Charlie has improved an incredible amount in the last year now that his focus is on golf and not split with football. This is evidenced by his recent run of victories and low scores on the high school circuit in Texas. We have always had a good track record at Vanderbilt with young golfers from Texas. Charlie is a terrific student-athlete that will do great things for the Commodores.

“I am very proud of these two young men and the decision they made to be Vanderbilt Commodores,” Shaw continued. “I anticipate that Jordan Janico and Charlie Ewing will add many of their own records to the growing list of accomplishments by the Vanderbilt Men’s Golf team.”
