Eight more wins on final day of Commodore Invite

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis added eight more wins on Sunday to wrap up the Commodore Invitational at the Curry Tennis Center.

Over the three-day weekend, Vanderbilt won 21 matches, including 14 singles and seven doubles matches. Joubert Klopper, Max Freeman and George Harwell won all three singles matches, while Joubert Klopper and Marcus Ferriera swept all three of  their doubles matches over the weekend.

“I thought it was a good weekend,” head coach Ian Duvenhage said. “I told the team I thought they were mentally and emotionally tough in some really difficult matches. We did a good job of hanging in there and maintained good attitudes throughout.

Against Memphis on Sunday, Klopper earned his second win over a ranked opponent during the invitational. He bested 76th-ranked Stevenson, 6-3, 7-5, while Harwell won in straight sets for the second straight day, 6-3, 6-2, over Taylor, and Freeman cruised 6-3, 6-1 over Fanlo.

Siim Troost and Macsen Sisam also won in singles. Troost defeated Edgar, 6-3, 6-2, while Sisam won over Lipscomb’s Uribe, 6-3. 2-6, 6-3.

In doubles, Klopper/Ferriera won for the third straight day with an 8-6 victory over Fanlo/Malea, while Sisam and Connor Robb-Wilcox won 8-4 over Rock/Edgar, and the combo of Harwell and Freeman won convincingly, 8-1 over Lipscomb’s Bogdanovich and Uribe.

Among the overall winners at the invitational, Harwell won the A-Draw, Max Freeman was the B Division champion and the Memphis combination of Taylor/Stevenson won the Commodore Invitational doubles title.

“Georgia Tech and North Carolina are top 30 teams,” Duvenhage added. “It’s not time for us to get carried away but it shows what we can do when we work hard and are ready to compete.”

The Commodore Invitational wraps up the Fall schedule for Vanderbilt. The Commodores will be back in action in late January with the complete Spring schedule to be announced soon.
