4/28/2006 Philadelphia, Pa. — The remarkable distance running campaign for Vanderbilt’s Amy Huss continued late Thursday as the Commodore junior smashed another personal record while finishing third in the 5,000-meter run. Running collegiately for the first time in her home state, Huss ran the distance — just over three miles — in 16:29.66, finishing behind Southeastern Conference distance champion Angela Homan of Auburn (16:11.02) and Kaitlyn Gwyther of Quinnipiac College (16:12.63) among a field of 29 runners. Commodore senior teammate Erika Schneble, the team record holder and 2004 SEC outdoor 5,000 meter champion, also set a seasonal best in the race, running 17:02.69. Schneble’s record of 16:08.18 came in 2004 while earning All-America honors. With the SEC Championships two weeks away in Fayetteville, Ark., the strong Penn Relays performance stamps Huss as a legitimate contender in the 5,000 meters. Homan, a likely SEC favorite in the 5,000, could attempt a 5,000-10,000 meter double at the conference championships. With the Penn Relays effort, Huss has posted a pair of personal bests in the 5,000 meters during the outdoor season. In the Raleigh Relays four weeks ago, Huss became the fourth Commodore to run sub-17:00 in the 5,000, finishing with a time of 16:41.67. That effort was Huss’ best until the Penn Relays performance. Huss’ outdoor campaign has also included excellent performances in the 3,000 meters. Twice this month, she has eclipsed personal records in the event last month. Huss’ top 3,000-meter effort of 9:37.06 came while winning the Vanderbilt Invitational on April 21. The junior, who missed nearly all of the 2004-05 campaign with injuries, blossomed last fall as the team’s top runner in cross country. In indoor competition this winter, Huss eclipsed the team’s oldest mark when he ran 9:40.43 in the 3,000 meters at Notre Dame. |
