SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico — Vanderbilt women’s golf used a fast start at the Battle at the Beach tournament, finishing even after the first round on Friday, to sit only two strokes behind leader and reigning tournament champion Ole Miss.

Freshman Tillie Claggett, currently tied for second place individually, led the way with a 4-under-par round capped off with an eagle on the par-5 13th. Virginie Ding followed, finishing two strokes under par on the day.

“I thought today was a solid start,” said head coach Greg Allen. “Tillie and Ginnie really carried the load today and did a nice job of getting under par and staying there. They looked in control of their games all day.”

Lynn Lim notched a 74 in round one, with Celina Sattelkau posting a 76 and Natasha Kiel carding a 79 to round out the Vanderbilt lineup.

The Dores currently lead all teams in pars made at 59 total.

“I do like the effort everybody gave today and want to see that same fight the next two days,” said Allen.

After round one, the podium consists entirely of SEC squads: Ole Miss first, Vanderbilt second, and LSU in third, trailing the Commodores by one stroke.

Round 2 on Saturday will have the same shotgun format as the opening round. Vanderbilt will tee off on Nos. 1-4 at 8 a.m. CT alongside Ole Miss, LSU, and host TCU.
