BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – One day after scoring 20 points and snagging 11 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench in Vanderbilt’s season-opening 80-55 win against Howard, redshirt freshman center Stephanie Holzer was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week by the league’s office on Monday.
The 6-foot-4 center from Newtown Square, Pa., made 5-of-6 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line as the Commodores won their 25th straight home opener. Holzer was also a force on the defensive end, where she had three blocked shots and two steals.
In the first half, Holzer scored 11 straight points for the Commodores, which helped trigger a 16-3 run for Vanderbilt as the Commodores opened up a 27-point lead at the half.
Holzer’s 20-point, 10-rebound game was the first by a Commodore since Tiffany Clarke scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Dec. 28, 2009 against ETSU.
Clarke earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors for her performance against ETSU, and she was the last Commodore to earn the award until Holzer.
Vanderbilt returns to the court Thursday when Samford visits Memorial Gym for a 7 p.m. tip.
