Recaps: Day One

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Vanderbilt track and field team has earned seven team points, scoring points in both completed events it had entries in, following the conclusion of day two of the 2013 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Freshman Jennifer Cannon scored in the heptathlon (seventh), while Liz Anderson (fifth) and Grace Orders (eighth) scored Commodore points in the 10,000 meters. At the end of the day’s action, Vanderbilt is in seventh place.

Heptathlon

Jennifer Cannon gave Vanderbilt its first team points of the meet, placing seventh in the heptathlon with 5,183 points. After a day one that was highlighted by tying the school record in the 100 meter hurdles, Cannon held her position to have the top score by a freshman.

She placed 10th in the long jump, with a mark of 5.27 meters (17′ 3.5″) that was good for 10th. She rebounded nicely, with all three throws in the javelin longer than any previous throws, including a long of 33.21 meters (108′ 11″) that was good for seventh.

Cannon capped her first SEC Championship heptathlon with a seventh place finish in the 800 meters, clocking 2:23.30. The Bristol, Tenn., native earns SEC All-Freshman honors for her performance.

“I’m very proud of Jen today,” said Assistant Coach Clark Humphreys. “She didn’t quit after a bit of a rocky long jump, came back to set three PRs in the javelin and earn All-Freshman honors. I couldn’t be happier for her.”

400 meter hurdles

Cannon followed up her heptathlon by coming back to join classmate Faith Washington in the 400 meter hurdles. The duo finished 17th and 18th, with Cannon edging Washington in 1:02.39. Washington crossed the line just .11 seconds later in 1:02.50.

They were the third and fourth best freshmen in the field of 25 runners and seven rookies.

10,000 meters

Anderson paced Vanderbilt in the 10K, placing fifth in 34:12.98. Grace Orders placed eighth in 34:48.05, just edging teammate Allie Scalf (34:50.53) for the final scoring position.

It was just the second collegiate 10K for Anderson, who had the best time in the league entering the meet. For Orders and Scalf, it was their collegiate debut in the event.
