Game 1 Recap: Black 4, Gold 3 Game 3: Sunday at 1 p.m. CT (Free Admission)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Gold Squad returned the favor Friday night at Hawkins Field.
One night after the Black squad rallied for a win the Gold team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Black squad 4-3, evening the Black and Gold series at 1-1with the finale to be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.
“It was pretty well pitched,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “The first twostarters pitched really well and kept the game very competitive. The Gold teamhad opportunities early and stranded people.”
Gold, however, scored in the seventh and eighth innings. Trailing 3-1, Goldknotted the score at 3 when sophomore outfielder Alex Hilliard, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, tied the game on a balk by freshman pitcher Navery Moore.Hilliard knocked in Gold’s second run with a double to right field that scoredfreshman third baseman Alex Harris, who started the frame with a double.
“We never doubted that we were down,” Hilliard said. “We’re always looking fora chance to come back. We never thought we were down.”
Freshman infielder Riley Reynolds, who went 3-for-4, scored the game-winning run on a two-out throwing error by junior shortstop Brian Harris in theeighth inning.
“They executed, and we didn’t,” said sophomore left-handed pitcher RichieGoodenow, who pitched one inning for the loss, striking out two andsurrendering one hit. “That was the difference.”
Black tied the game at 1 in the fifth inning when Harris, who started the inningwith a single to center field, scored on an error by freshman Gabe Ortiz.Goodenow, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, had an RBI single in the sixth thatplated freshman infielder Aaron Westlake. He slapped a hit to right field in theframe. Sophomore catcher Curt Casali, who led off the frame with a walk,scored on the hit as Hilliard misplayed the ball.
Gold center fielder Jonathan White gave his squad a 1-0 lead by scoring on anRBI single courtesy of Hilliard.
Junior Drew Hayes pitched 1.1 innings for the win, fanning one and surrenderingone hit. Sophomore Sean Bierman pitched five innings for gold, striking out sixwhile giving up four hits.
Sophomore Chase Reid surrendered one earned run and six hits while strikingout five and walking one for Gold.
Freshman Sonny Gray will start at pitcher for the Black squad on Sunday,while sophomore Taylor Hill takes the mound for Gold.
