Box Score | Black & Gold – Game 5
With the series already in hand the Gold team had little to play for on Wednesday afternoon in the fifth and final game of the Black & Gold Series but you would not have known it.
The Gold squad wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead with two runs in the first. Dansby Swanson started the rally with a one-hopper through the right side of the infield. Rhett Wiseman then laced a triple into the right field corner to score Swanson and set up the Gold team’s next run. Zander Wiel immediately cashed in on the opportunity with a single for a 2-0 Gold lead in the first.
Those two runs were more than enough for the Gold team’s pitching. Jared Miller cruised through three no-hit innings with four strikeouts and two walks before being lifted for Luke Stephenson. The redshirt freshman kept the no hitter intact into the fifth when he handed the ball over to lefty Keenan Kolinsky. Freshman Drake Parker greeted the senior with an infield single for the Black team’s first hit of the game. Parker notched the other Black hit in the seventh with a single into center field off fellow freshman John Kilichowski.
The Gold team tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on Wiseman’s second triple of the game scoring Swanson again, who walked and stole two bases to reach third before the triple. Wiel led the way with three hits with Wiseman driving in two runs and Swanson scoring two in the win.
Miller (2-0) earned his second win of the series with Kilichowski earning the save with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh. Fulmer (0-2) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits over four innings.
Swanson led all hitters in the series going 7-for-15 (.467) with seven runs scored, three RBI and four stolen bases. Wiseman knocked in seven runs in the series while going 6-for-14 (.429) with three extra-base hits. Wiel knocked in seven runs for the Gold squad and belted the team’s lone homer. Xavier Turner led the Black team going 4-for-11 (.364) with three RBI and three walks. Freshman Ro Coleman posted three extra-base hits and scored five runs for the Black team.
Jared Miller struck out 15 batters over his eight innings to lead all pitchers. Beede fanned 14 over 10 innings with no walks.
The Commodores are now finished with fall practice and open the 2014 season February 14 at Long Beach State.
